Analyse Bernard Shaw as a dramatist.
G. B. SHAWAS A DRAMATIST-GB.Shaw was a frequent and skilled writer to both drama and novel. His style was different and he was called a moralist, propagandist, iconoclast etc. He wrote Immaturity in 1978. The Irrational Knot in 1880. Love Among the Artists in 1881, Casel Byron’s Profession in 1882 and An Unsocial Socialist in 1883. They were not successful as they were dinctured with dramatic colour.
In 1894 he wrote Arms and the Man’ and Candida were staged and earned a great fame. In 1890, he started his career as a dramatist. In comparison to the contemporary plays, he laid emphasis on morals and social evils.
Bernard haw always tried to create areality out of the social and moral evils. He mocked and satirised them.
Shaw’s contribution in the field of English literature is remarkable. Shaw is a master dramatist. He is one of the greatest dramatists of the world His dramas are full of ideas. In his drama Widower’s Houses’ winch came to light in 1892, he offered the miserable condition of slums and in human treatment of landlords. His other famous plays are The Apple Cart’, ‘Arms and the Man’, ‘St. Joan’ etc. The Apple Cart is a satire on democracy. Arms and the Man’ is a satire on omantic glory of war and higher love. ‘St. Joan’ passes satire on the ignorance and the corruption of the modern age.
Bernard Shaw is a social reformer. He writes on the problems of the society. His dramas deal with social follies and vices. In ‘Arms and the Man’ he passes satire on useless glory of war and love. Love is not property of flatters. Ultimately to get promotion in life the new morals win.
His plot construction is well knit. Shaw paid more attention to the morals and principles that are necesasary in life than construction which is the heart of the unity of a drama.
Shaw’s characters are powerful and strong. He introdues humourous of the plots characters also. In ‘Arms and the Man’ captain Bluntschli represents the image of a chocolate-cream soldiers. he is a professional soldier. He fights when he desires. He fills his pockets with chocolate creams in stead of cartridges.
Shaw’s dialogues help the developing the plot of the play. His dialogues are full of philosophic thoughts. They help in understanding the characters. Bluntschli’s carefree nature is exposed in his speech. “I have no ammunition. What use are cartridges in battle? I always carry chocolate instead.” His sense of humour and wit comes out in his dialogue. Nicola are Louka are foil in each other.
Shaw creates humourous situations with the purpose to ridicule and discard some age old particular morals Sergius is mocked for his romanticism of wai and Love, Humour and satire is a tool for Shaw to express the vices of society Idleness of the persons like Petkoff makes a man henpecked and the persons who are obedient, faithful and cool minded get promotion soon in life.
Shaw uses a simple language and interesting style in his plays. In Arms and the Man’ Shaw’s ship craftsman comes to light when an old coat plays such an important role that the action is changed thoroughly.
Shaw believes in teaching. His plays have a strong of moral sense. Shaw exposes the vain glory of romantic love.
Shaw’s titles are always interesting and meaningful. The play passes satire on the romanticism of war and love.
Seeing art of Characterization, humour, wit, satire, and social purpose lie behind his dramas, style is new. He is a unique figure in drama. Shaw out of question, is a great dramatist, moralist and propagandist.
