When George Orwell decided to write ‘Animal Farm‘, he was fully aware of the faults of the communist regime. He was of the opinion that the communist were the unofficial representative of Russia. He completed his novel in February 1944. But no publisher of England wanted to publish it because its theme was the harsh criticism of Soviet policies. In May 1945, the famous publisher Secker and Warburg decided to publish it with great honour.

Besides the Russian history, it was also influenced by the two world wars. During those days, it was very daring work to laugh at the vices of Russian policies because Russia was considered to be one of the greatest powers of the world. The period at which Orwell aimed in his novel, was the period of Stalin, between 1924-1953. Stalin claimed that he had been democratic ruler of Russia while some critics were of the opinion that Russian people were also suffering from the tyranny. Through his novel, Orwell was also of the opinion that Stalin was al dictator and he seldom paid any attention to the problems of common men of Russia.

On 22nd June, 1941, Germany surprised the whole world by attacking Russia. This attack resulted the crumble the relations of Communism and Nazism. Germany destroyed the industrial structure of Russia. They also weakened Russian economic structure. The people of Russia had to face a struggle and they had to make enormous sacrifices. By the end of war, Russia was the only country ruies by communists, who controlled many other territories. They had to lose other territories due to war Stalin declared that communists were able to face every type of struggle. But a few politicians were of the view the mental confusion and vexation were rampant among the people of Russia. Critics like Orwell found a cold war situation among the Russians Stalin began to rule like a tyrant.

In ‘Animal Farm’ Orwell shows how Nicholas II was over thrown in the form the overthrow of Jones. The revolution that disposed of Nicholas II worried the rest of the world. Later on. U.S.A. and Britain sent their armies to arrest Nicholas II and to overthrow the rule of revolutionaries. The novelist presents this through “Battle of Cowshed. The writer introduces the episode of the struggle of power between Stalin and Trotsky through the conflict between Napoleon and Snowball. The issue of windm! is the mbol of the first five year plan which was introduced by Trotsky The egg rebellion of the hens in the story is also represents the same conflict In 1930, the rest of the world was convinced that communists were able to rule and control the problems.

Therefore, the Stalin government started trade relations with the countries of Europe. They enjoyed many facilities which were enjoyed by certain communists. In the story, pigs alone enjoy the privilege and lead luxurious life while other animals remain busy in labourious work. First of all, Soviet Union did not allow practice of any religion but in 1944, Stalin wrote a letter to Pope and permitted the establishment of Church in Russia. In novel, Moses, who stands for religion, leaves the farm just after the revolution but after sometime he is allowed to live at the farm. His stories of Sugarcandy Mountains bring comfort to the oppressed and suffering animals. The last scene of the novel in which Napoleon entertains his neighbours, stands for the various meetings between Stalin and Churchill during the World War II.

To sum up. it can be said that Animal Farm’ is a true and successful allegory. It contains very interesting story and at the same time it shows historical events and personalities of Russia. It not only tells us the result of Soviet revolution but also let us know about every revolution that is brought about for freedom. George Orwell presents a true picture of contemporary history.
