Draw character sketch of Hastings and Miss Neville.

Hastings

Hastings is an easy-going young man. The other qualities which we find in him are as follows-

His Love for Romance-He loves romance. He meets Neville in London. He falls in love with her. Their love gradually develops.

His Aim in Coming with Marlow-He has a definite aim in coming with Marlow. He will meet Neville. He will plan to run away with her. Marlow promises to help him in it.

His Love for Neville-He is in deep love with Neville. He does not care for her fortune. He says to Marlow: “Miss Neville’s person is all I ask, and that is mine, both from her dead father’s consent, and her own desire.”

His Timidity in Love- He has deep love for Neville. But he is a timid lover. He wants to run away with Neville. He has not the courage to say frankly to Mr. and Mrs. Hardcastle that he loves her.

His love for Marlow- He loves Marlow. He is very good friend. But he has a sense of fun. So, he does not tell Marlow his mistake. In other words, he does not remove Marlow’s mistake about the inn.

His Self-Possession- His self-possession is wonderful. He never loses it. He is always in a balanced state of mind. He plans to run away with Neville fails. But he does not feel disturbed. He remains calm.

Conclusion- In conclusion, we can say in the words of Sir Charles: “Honest Heorge Hastings. As worthy a fellow as lives, and the girl could not have made a wiser choice.”

Miss Neville

Miss Neville is a nice spirited girl. We find the following qualities in her character-

Her Love for Ronance- She loves romance. Once, she goes to London. There, she falls in love with Hastings. Their love gradually develops.

Her Readiness to Elope-She is in deep love with Hastings. He comes with Marlow. He becomes friendly with Tony. Tony encourages him to run away with Neville. Hastings asks Neville to go with her to France. To this, Neville readily agrees.

Her Pretence to Love Tony-Mrs. Hardcastle wants Neville to marry Tony. Neville does not want to make her aunt angry. So, she pretends to love him. She even makes love to him in Mrs. Hardcastle’s presence.

Her deception of Mrs. Hardcastle-By pretending to love Tony, she deceives Mrs. Hardcastle. But there is nothing unfair in love. So, we cannot blame Neville. We are rather pleased that she plays a trick upon her bard hearted aunt.

Her Firmness- She shows wonderful firmness at the time of her second elopement. She is taken by Mr. Hardcastle to Pedigree’s house. But actually Tony leaves them in the horse-pond. He, then asks Hastings to run away with Neville. Hastings persuades her to do so. But she does not agree. She must first get her jewels from Mrs. Hardcastle. She sticks to it up the end.

A Foil to Miss Hardcastle-Neville is a foil to Miss Hardcastle. She is not half so dignified as Miss Hardcastle is. She much more a typical girl of the 18th century than Miss Hardcastle. She does not seem to love a strong individuality like Miss Hardcastle. Thus, there is a sort of contrast between the two girls.

Conclusion- In conclusion, we can say that Miss Neville is certainly less individualized than Miss Hardcastle. Yet, in her own way, she is quite charming. He likes her romantic spirit and practical sense.
