Essay On THE COMPUTERISATION OF SERVICES IN INDIA

Introduction

Today man’s scientific knowledge is very wide and highly advanced. It has helped him to discover and invent many things for his comforts and efficiency. Computer is the latest and most brilliant child of science.

How computer came into existence ?

Charles Babbage developed the first difference and analytical engine in 1812, the later developed ‘Analytical engine’. This machine had the concepts of modern computers namely memory, arithmetic unit and capacity to handle stored programme. But this machine could not be put into practical application due to technological limitations. at his time. In 1854, George Boole invented the logic system which is the basis for today’s digital computers. In 1937, the first electro machine calculator was developed by Howard and Dilton. In 1946, the first computer came into existence. It was named as ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Calculator]. It was developed by Dr. John Nouchly and J.P.Eckert University of Pennasylvannia U.S.A. In 1951 Remington Rand Corporation of U.S.A. brought out a commercial computer named UNIVAC (Universal Automatic Computer).

Transistor technology developed computer

Transistor technology gave birth to second generation of computers. These were smaller in size, more reliable, and had high; speed of operation. A 3rd generation computer consisted of IBN-370 type. The fourth generation computer presently manufactured by U.S.A., Japan and other European and Asian countries are based on large scale integration. Fifth generation computers are under trial in U.S.A. and Japan. These are based on artificial intelligence. They will think like human brain, collect most information from their reservoir of memory and make expert judgement and decisions.

Services which computers render

Mr. Rajiv Gandhi, our youngest Prime Minister, proclaimed to computerise most of its public service before entering the 21st century. Calculating machines, which we call now compters, have entered nearly all fields of human activity. Since 1946 the world has witnessed a period of vast activity in computerisation of various services. We have now computers which can do different functions e.g., making predictions about weather, studying changes taking place in space, examining parcels and prescribing treatments, collecting data about factory workers, data processing in electronics and predicting results, making reservations at railway stations and aerodromes, making and operating radars and missiles, performing various electrical jobs in banks, life insurance corporations and offices.

Computerisation of services in India

If India wants to enter the computer age, she will have to import advanced computer technology and give computer training to a vast number of people in this country. The country, has started developing computers. They will be needed in space research. These computers will guide and control the flight of space ships. Today computers are developed for helping defence services. They will be needed for making defence studies and controlling operations. We have started the use of computers in factories and offices for collecting data. Small computers have been installed in Life Insurance Corporation Offices.

Conclusion

The future of computerisation in India is bright. Computer has been already introduced in banks, railway stations and in aerodromes. They will be used in factories to supervise and guide machines. At present we have just made beginning and within the next fifteen years the country shall be on the road to computerisation.
