Introduction: Captain Bluntschli is the main character of GB.Shaw’s comedy Arms and the Man’,His father was the proprietor of six large hotels. Bluntschli is a professional soldier. He is in the artillery of the Serbian army. Like everyone else, Bluntschli field from the battle field for life. He was sheltered by Raina in her bed-room.

Bluntschli is a man of about thirty five of the age. He is of middling stature and undistinguished appearance, with strong neck and shoulders, roundish obstinate looking head covered with short crisp bronze curls, clear quick eyes and good brows and mouth, hopelessly prosaic nose, trim soldier like carriage adn energetic manner and with all his wits about him in spite of his desperate predicament.

Professional Soldier: Bluntschli is a professional soldier in every way. He joined the Serbian army because the Serbs came first on the road from Switzerland. He has no great zeal for fighting.

An Efficient: Bluntschli is a very efficient soldier. He has often acted as sword instructor. He is not a fool as most soldiers are. He has his wits about him and although very tired is quite alert in Raina’s room. He frightens her with his empty pistol and takes up her gown as the more useful weapon than the revolver.

This hero of the anti-romantic comedy has nothing romantic about him. He is thoroughly practical. He has his own philosophy about a soldier’s life. This philosophy is to a great extent, Shaw’s philosophy. He is certainly airing Shaw’s views when he says that cartridges are no use in battle; chocolate is more important. Old soldiers always keep grub. Sometime, his practical intelligence seems almost absurd but it is quite right, as in his pawning Petkoff old coat. It was certainly that best way to keep it safe. Even in love and marriage it is his practical sense that guides him. A school girls’s game becomes real love for him as soon as he finds that Raina is twenty-three.

His Romance: To make him absolutely devoid of romance would have been to make him an unfeeling dull piece of earth-an inhuman being Bluntschli has, as he himself tells us, an incurably romantic disposition. He ran away from home twice when he was a boy. He went into the army instead of into his father’s business. He climbed the balcony instead of diving into some celled. He came sneaking back to have another look at Raina. But his romantic disposition is not so extreme and even hypocritical as Serguis’s and is never able to get the better of his practical sense. He came to have a look at Raina but he never behaved with her as Sergius did with her or with Louka. He tells her of course, that he is her infatuated admirer, but before this he has already told her that, though he admires her, he cannot believe a single word she says when she strikes the noble attitude and speaks in a thrilling voice.

Bluntschli can correctly judge men. Though soldier himself, he says that nine soldiers out of ten are born fools. His statement is proved the very, next moment when the Russian officer fails to notice what the maid-servant had noticed his revolver lying on the ottoman. His behaviour reaction from her.

Bluntschli is a nice gentleman in so many ways. He is cultured. He does not allow Raina to touch his hand because it is soiled and he must have a wash first. Bluntschli is quite chivalrous; he flings Raina’s cloak to he as soon as he finds that she needs it. He is honest and grateful. Your servant to the death, he says to Raina, and wishes that he had joined the Bulgarian army Bluntschli has a deep sense of humour, he humour Raina when she tells him about the flight of stairs and the library in their house.
