Definitions of Educational Administration

Educational administration is defined by scholars in many different ways. To have a clear understanding of the term, we may take the help of the following definitions.

(i) Good

“All those techniques and procedures employed in operating the educational organisation in accordance with established policies, is defined as administration.”

(ii) W.M. Ryburn

Administration is not primarily concerned with arrangements, timetable, scheme of study, Type of building, records etc., but it is concerned with the attitude of our work and with the children with whom we work. Thus school administration means the practical measures which are adopted to ensure that the system of our work, which we will use, to be of maximum assistance in carrying out our aims of education and for the benefit of children.”

(iii) Dr. Jaswant Singh

“School administration is the hub of the educational process. All the plans, policies and practices are bound to fail unless and until there is a sound administration in school.”

(iv) Encyclopedia of Educational Research

“Educational administration is the process of integrating the efforts of personnel and of utilizing appropriate materials in such a way as to promote effectively the development of children and youth but also with the growth of adults and particularly with the growth of school personnel.”

(v) Walton

“The subject matter of educational administration is not a thing of intellectual beauty. Borrowing fragments from several diverse disciplines-law, political science, social psychology, sociology economics, business education, engineering, architecture, and statics- it lacks well-defined, highly organised body of subject matter, it has no elegant and simple theoretical structure, and as literature, it is singularly devoid of aesthetic qualities. In addition to the fragments appropriated from other disciplines, the content of the course in administration has considered it a discipline of practices, the cautious recommendation of promising techniques, personal success stories and lively anecdotes, all surrounded with the aura of common sense and often purveyed by more or less successful administration.”

“Educational administration approaches statesmanship when there are clearly formulated long-term policies and objectives, and when day-by-day activities and problems are dealt with under the guidance of the perspective given by such long-term policies.

(vii) Jesse. B. Sears

“In education, administration contains much that we mean by the word government and is closely related in content to such words as superintendence, supervision, planning, oversight, direction, organisation, control, guidance and regulation.”

(viii) Brook Adams

“Administration is the capacity to coordinate many and often conflicting social energies in a single organism, so adroitly that they shall operate as a unit.”

(ix) Graham Balfour

“Educational administration is to enable the right pupils to receive the right education from the right teachers at a cost within the means of the state, under conditions which will enable the pupils best to profit by their training.
