Essay On THE COOLIE
Introduction
The coolie is a man who carries loads and luggage of other people from one place to another. He gets a small amount for his work. The amount depends upon the weight of load, the distance and the conditions of time and place.
His appearance
The coolie is a poor man. So, he puts on a poor dress, a bandi and a short dhoti. His clothes are often torn and dirty. In cities, the coolies wander about in the market places with a basket in their hands or on heads. The coolie has a small napkin but no cap. His feet are generally bare. At the railway station, the coolie seems to be well-off. He puts on a green or red uniform with a number on it. This number shows that he is a bonafide registered coolie.
His ways to work
In the city markets there is a great competition between coolies. Two or three coolies will run to you if you want their services. They are very cheap. They carry heavy loads on their heads or backs. They are eager to get work of any kind. Their income is uncertain.
At the railway station, the coolies are seen sitting at the entrance of the bridge or the platform. They have their truns by mutual settlement. So when a tonga or rickshaw or car comes they get work. The coolie at the station does not settle his wages with the respectable people.
His behaviour with passengers
If the passenger is old, poor and ignorant, he settles wages and demands a big amount. When the passenger is in haste to catch the train or reach home, he or she often agrees to pay the unreasonable amount. If the wages have not been settled the coolie is sure to create a scene. However much you may pay him, he is never satisfied. In spite of all rules fixed for his wages, he asks for more and more money. He returns your money and pretends to go away.
His life
The railway coolie is strong and clever. He manages to carry a number of things together on his hand, shoulders and hands. His life is hard and his income uncertain. He is always hungry for money to support his big family. He has to wait all the time. At night he takes short naps. He wakes up at the sound of the train.
Conclusion
We see that the life of a coolie is very hard. But he eats his simple food with great joy. He spends what he gets everyday and does not care for the tomorrow.
