Essay On THE PLASTIC AGE
Introduction
The modern age is the age of science. Science has made our lives comfortable, spicy and beautiful. There is no exaggeration in calling science as “The Alladin’s Lamp’. Various scientific inventions and useful items have brought about revolutionary changes in human life. We habitually used the metals, namely iron, copper, zinc, bronze, brass etc. but gradually science has also given us ‘plastic’. Plastic has done wonders in the activities of the human beings as well as in industries.
Invention of Plastic
Plastic was invented by two scientists named Diu Boes and John. It was manufactured out of Ethylene. It contains many compounds of Ethylene. This wonderful item came to be known as polythene or plastic.
Use of Plastic
The use of plastic was not popular in the beginning. Even the plastic items were not used in the house holds. Only the poor people used plastic items. The use of plastic has gained popularity now even in stylish families. Plastic has assumed the status of an important industry now.
Plastic Items
It is not easy to count the number of items manufactured by plastic in the present day world. Some industries make plastic grains (granules). Plastic has varied forms e.g., polyster, nylon, P.B.C. Thermoplastic etc. Artificial clothing, parts of the machines, water tanks, plastic doors, windows, covers of coolers, sheets, footwears, shoes, ropes, pens, pencils, bags, utensils, packing material etc. are made of plastic. The use of plastic is increasing day-by-day in making electric appliances. It is also being used in trucks, cars, motors, computers, telephones, elec tric wires (cables), aeroplanes, T.V., V.C.R., radio etc.
Advantages
The main advantage of the plastic items is that they are not fully destroyed. They get cracks and are torn but they are recycled. The rag pickers pick them up and send the heaps of worn and torn plastic items to the plastic factories for being melted and recycled. Very eye-catching items are now being made of plastic. There is no wonder that plastic is being used now in cosmetic items. Even the items of decoration are being made of plastic. (pictures, paintings, buntings etc.) The colourful flowers and plants made of plastic look more beautiful than the real flowers and plants. Sometimes we fail to identify whether they are natural or made of plastic. The plastic bags, ropes and clothes etc. have changed the very structure of human life. The plastic made packing material is providing us great convenience. The needs of clothing all over the world will stand unfulfilled in the absence of clothes made of polystar. Our kitchens and bathrooms contain many useful plastic items like the bottles, buckets, tumblers, mugs etc.
The resources of God-given metals are limited. They get con sumed or decreased with the passage of time but the resources of Man-made plastic are unlimited. It can be manufactured according to human need in any quantity at any time.
Disadvantages of Plastics
Every silver cloud has a dark lining and every coin has two sides. Same is true of plastic. Plastic too has both strong and weak points. There is no denying the fact that plastic has made revolutionary changes in human life. Alongwith it has caused environmental pollution. The plastic manufacturing factories spread air pollution which is harmful for the health of the people living near them. Moreover it gives out foul smell. The plastic bags are not reliable. They get torn quite soon.
Conclusion
Inspite of all its lacunas, the world of plastics is quite colourful and eye-catching. The day is not far when pollution-free plastic will gain popularity in every home and market.
