If agriculture and industry are regarded as the body and bones of the economy, transport and communications constitute its nerves.

Travelling a Natural Craze

Man has always been adventurous. He has been trying to know how the people live in other parts of the world. He has also had a keen desire to travel fast, see now lands. Also, he wanted to trade.

Roads and Sea Routes

Many lers and kings built several roads to link the different parts of their kingdom. Explorers found new lands and discovered more and more Sea Routes. The traders went with goods to far off lands and developed trade links.

Progress in Means of Transport

The growth and advancement of science and technology brought rapid changes in the means of transport and communication. Every time, with the invention of new machines and engines, the speed increased, and the people started covering long distances in a short time, with comfort and safety.

Modern means of Communication

Today, we have a large variety of means of transport and communication. We can travel all over the world with comfort and safety in a short time. We can exchange our goods with those of the other countries of the world. We can converse with our relatives and friends living thousands of kilometres away from us. In India, posts, telephone, telegraph, telex, FAX, mass-media like radio and television, satellite and print-media like newspapers and periodicals are the major means of communication.

Advantages of Good Transport

Good transport by land, sea and air is very essential nowadays. It facilitates the easy movement of people, foodstuffs and other products from town to town, country to country and continent to continent. It is essential to carry raw materials from their sources to the factories where they are processed and turned into manufactured goods, and also to carry those products to people who want to buy them.

Road, Railways, Sea and Air Transport

Most of the local traffic in a country is on the roads. Cars and buses carry people to work on visits, on picnics, and so on. Trucks and lorries carry goods from producers to wholesalers and to shops. For longer distances the railway has many advantages. It can carry more passengers and large amounts of bulky goods quickly, cheaply and with safety. Where distances are thousands of kilometres and oceans and mountains are the barriers, ships and aeroplanes are used. Air transport is very expensive, but very much quicker. However, ships still carry most of the overseas cargo.

Airports, Land ports and Sea-ports

All the countries of the world have airports and landports to handle exports and imports of the country. Countries having coastlines also have seaports. These ports are linked by land routes, ocean routes and air routes. Routes which connect different countries of the world are known as the International Routes. These advanced means of transport and communication have made our world shrink. Mountains and oceans are not barriers any longer.

Advantages of Means of Communication

Means of communication like post, telegraph and telephone not only provide personal service but also contribute a lot in promoting commerce and industry. But mass-media, both electronic, radio and television and print-media are extremely powerful as they transmit information, knowledge, ideals, emotions and skills by the use of symbols etc.

Development of means of transport and communication have helped the National Integration and also increased the human knowledge and social awakening through radio and T.V. programmes. Beside it we have to face Noise Pollution and Air Pollution which are harmful to everybody’s health. On the whole we can say that the transport and communication system is the life line of the country.
