Essay On THE SCENE AT A VILLAGE WELL
Introduction
Every village has a well in its centre. Villagers take water from it for drinking and washing purposes. The well has a raised platform around it. The villagers draw water by means of buckets.
Activities of young women along the well
Some young women come to the well daily to draw water. They cleanse their utensils there. Their sweet smiles with shining eyes show that they are cracking jokes with one another. Next moment they become serious. Perhaps they have seen some elderly man coming towards the well. Some women sing sweet songs. See how nicely they walk with piles of pots on their heads!
At some distance from the well you can see some women washing their clothes. Their tongues pour out ill talks about others. Again the village well is a news agency. Here you can get all kinds of reports, true and false, about the people.
A scene of battle-field
The village well becomes a battle field when the women quarrel over some topic. They exchange hot words. Sometimes they come to blows. But the quarrel is soon over. The presence of some old men brings the quarrel to an end.
Activities of youth near the well
On the other side you can see some youngmen taking bath. They try to show their muscles. Some use soap to show their good position. On this side quarrels are few. Elderly men pour water on their heads saying “Hari Om” and “Ram Ram”.
Scence at the trough
Near the well there is a trough. People bring their cattle there. It is a pleasing sight to see thirsty cattle drinking water from the trough. Eight or ten of them stand in a line to drink water. The owners go on whistling standing on one leg with the help of a stick.
A meeting place of the village
The village well presents a busy scene. It is a meeting place of all men and women of the whole village. It becomes a centre of activities. Some draw water, while others talk, laugh and make merry. Some take their bath reciting mantras (hymns) from the holy Gita and Ramayana. The farmers going to their fields stop there to give a drink to their cattle. There is a big tree near the well. The people pass their afternoon time under its shade. Some young people play cards and sing songs.
Conclusion
A village well becomes a busy place from the early morning. With the rising of the sun, the activities go on increasing. They last late in the night.
