Dickens is supreme creator of characters. His characters are next only to those of Shakespeare’s in variety and vividness. His art of characterisation is remarkable. It is picturesque, graphic and fashinating. Dickens is superb in the portrayal of a child as a social victim. “He is capital at a baby. His characters are divided into two classes normal and abnormal. He portraits average youngmen and women. His greatest success lies with confessed eccentrics.” – Gissing

Dicken’s characters are both types and individuals. They become types without losing their individuality. They are intensely vital. They cannot be called a caricature. He has failed to depict characters of strong passions. His characters fail to develop through circumstances. His critics often say that Dickens’ characters are dubbed as caricatures we find a good deal of exaggeration in his characters. His characters. flat. They do not change are psychologically. Dickens is satirical towards female characters. They are the source of joyous laughters. Their presentation is realistic. His female characters dictated Victorian morality. They are mostly drawn from lower middle class. Dickens has failed in presenting women in love.

Oliver Twist is a pathetic figure. He is a victim of social system and indivdual apathy. “Oliver is essentially the incarnation of a moral quality, and the particular virtue he represents requires that he appears without defence. He seems to be the ideal of incorruptible innrence. Mr. Browslow is a god father to Oliver. He adopts Oliver as his own son. Fagin is a hardened criminal. He is in human brute. He is the evil hovering around Oliver. Monks is Oliver’s half brother. Monks is not a character bond a device. Mr. Bumble is the parish geadle. He is cruel and brutish. He is a sadist. Bill Sikes is a criminal out and out. Charley Bates is an important member of Fagin’s gang. Jack Deckins, the Artful Drager is Fagin’s chief pupil. Mr. Griming is a humourous character. Rose belongs to a well to do middle class family. Nancy is a pathetic character.
